What is a filling?

A filling is a restorative procedure performed after a cavity (or a carious lesion) has been diagnosed. A cavity can be diagnosed visually or on an x-ray (radiograph) by a dentist. Cavities begin when the bacteria in our mouths produce acid when metabolizing sugars from foods we eat.

When a cavity is detected, ideally the cavity should be removed as soon as possible to limit the size of the filling. Your dentist may use different materials to replace the diseased area of tooth, at Poole Creek Family Dentistry, Dr. Hollingdale uses a tooth coloured filling material to replace the tooth structure compromised by a cavity. Addressing cavities when they are small can help decrease the incidence of postoperative complications such as sensitivity.

The best way to prevent cavities?

1. practicing good oral hygiene

2. limiting the amount of sugary or acidic foods

3. having regular exams and cleanings to prevent decay from starting and detecting it early
