A root canal is a dental procedure performed by a dentist that removes the nerve of the treated tooth.
In many instances, root canals are performed on teeth experiencing pain. The root canal removes the nerve, which causes the tooth to stop experiencing pain from the diseased nerve.
Why would you need a root canal? There are several possible reasons which may include:
- Cavity or infection - Injury to the tooth - Required to restore a broken down tooth
During the root canal procedure your dentist will carefully remove the nerve of the tooth and place a root canal filling material in its place.
After the root canal, a crown is usually required to protect the tooth from fracturing in the future.
If you have more questions about root canals or about your oral health, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hollingdale.
